English - Hazrat Molavi Sher Ali ^ra

And how many a city have We destroyed, while it was given to wrongdoing, so that it is fallen down on its roofs; and how many a deserted well and lofty castle!

اردو ترجمہ مرزا طاہر احمد خلیفة المسیح الرابعؒ

اور کتنی ہی بستیاں ہیں جنہیں ہم نے ہلاک کر دیا جبکہ وہ ظلم کرنے والی تھیں۔ پس اب وہ اپنی چھتوں کے بل گری پڑی ہیں اور کتنے ہی متروک کنوئیں ہیں اور مضبوط بنائے ہوئے محل ہیں (جن سے ایسا ہی سلوک کیا گیا)۔

Et que de villes avons-Nous détruites, tandis qu’elles s’adonnaient à l’iniquité, si bien que leurs toits se sont effondrés sur elles. Et que de puits désertés et des palais solidement construits en ruines !

Wie so manche Stadt haben Wir zerstört, weil sie voll des Frevels war, dass ihre Dächer mit ihr eingestürzt sind, und manch verlassenen Brunnen und manch hochragendes Schloss!

اردو تفسیرِ صغیر

اور کتنی ہی بستیاں ہیں جن کو ہم نے اس حالت میں ہلاک کیا تھا کہ وہ ظلم کر رہی تھیں وہ آج اپنی چھتوں پر گری پڑی ہیں اور کتنے کنوئیں ہیں جو بالکل متروک ہیں اور کتنے اونچے اونچے قلعے ہیں جو تباہ ہو چکے ہیں۔

Important Words:

خاویة (fallen) is derived from خوی. They say خوی البیت i.e. (1) the house fell down in ruins; (2) it became empty and untenanted (Aqrab). See also 2:260.

معطلة (deserted) is derived from عطل. They say عطل الشیء (attala) i.e. he rendered the thing untended or neglected. عطل البئرmeans, he gave up going to the well to drink from it. عطل الابل means, the camels went away without a pastor to look after them (Aqrab). واذا العشار عطلت means, and when the she-camels ten-months pregnant are abandoned or are left without a pastor to look after them (81:5).

مشید (lofty) means, lofty, strongly or firmly built. See also 4:79.

کتنی ہی خطاکاربستیاں ہیں جن کو ہم نے تباہ کیا ہے اور آج وہ اپنی چھتوں پر اُلٹی پڑی ہیں، کتنے ہی کنویں بیکار اور کتنے ہی قصر کھنڈر بنے ہوئے ہیں

English - Sahih

And how many a city did We destroy while it was committing wrong - so it is [now] fallen into ruin - and [how many] an abandoned well and [how many] a lofty palace.

Commentary:

The verse is of general application but it specially alludes to the punishment in store for the peoples mentioned in the preceding verses.

کتنی ہی بستیاں ہیں جو ظالم تھیں، میں نے ان کو پہلے مہلت دی، پھر پکڑ لیا اور سب کو واپس تو میرے پاس ہی آنا ہے
